1. How can bamboo be an environmentally friendly material? The trees are being cut down, aren’t they?
First of all bamboo is not a tree, it is a grass. And by cutting the older bamboo plants, there will be more energy in the bamboo forest for the younger plants.
In addition bamboo has a relatively short life cycle: it grows to maturity in around 6 years. This is very fast compared to most tropical woods, which need at least 20 years to grow before they can be used for applications like flooring, paneling and veneer.
For further information: go to environment.

2. Is the panda bear being threatened by the use of bamboo?
Pandas (the giant panda and the small panda) live in the central mountain ranges of central China. Pandas go to places where the lower species of bamboo are easily accessible. The bamboo species that is used in the DMVP veneer is the Phyllostachys Pubescens? This species has no leaf growth on the first 5 meters of the stem and is therefore not a source of food for the panda. DMVP only uses bamboo that comes from plantations managed by farmers in the provinces Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui and Jiangxi. These provinces are far away from the panda region.

3. What is the difference between plain pressed and side pressed veneer?
Plain pressed and side pressed refers to the surface structure of the veneer. In the plain pressed option the bamboo nodes (which were once the rings in the bamboo stem) are clearly visible. The bamboo strips form a line pattern, with lines, which are approximately 2 cm. apart from each other.
In the side pressed version the line pattern is narrow (approx. 5 mm between the lines) and the bamboo nodes are less visible.
For further information: go to production process.

4. Is there also a rotary bamboo veneer?
Yes, there is. To create rotary bamboo veneer the bamboo stem is being turned around while slicing off the veneer. This results in a veneer with the bamboo nodes in one line (you can actually see the ring which was once on the bamboo stem). Until now the quality of this veneer has been very poor. However, if you would like more information, please contact us.

5. Can bamboo veneer be pressed with any glue at any temperature?
No. Bamboo veneer has a backing and it depends on the type of backing which glue and pressing method can be used. The standard backing is of cellulose. Please contact DMVP for details for other possible backings.

6. Can bamboo be made fire resistant?
Yes. DMVP developed the veneered ceiling panels for the Madrid airport. For this project the highest fire standard of Europe was one of the requirements.
